It’s that time of year again to don the green and meet with other revelers over a few pints to celebrate Irishness the world over. Our small but vibrant Hamburg-Irish community is blessed with a number of events over the weekend, all of which kicks off on Thursday the 16th of March with the Irish Heartbeat Festival in Bargteheide, north of the city. On the 17th itself, as the Kiez is overrun with party-goers, Gruenspan in St. Pauli hosts the Irish Night im Hamburger Hafenkonzert, featuring numerous Irish acts, which will be later broadcast on NDR over the weekend. Also on Friday night, Monkey’s Music Club in Altona host their Saint Patrick’s day party with the Millerntor Brigade. On Saturday, the Rieckhof in Harburg features a number of bands (and the local school of Irish dance) in Harburg.
As per usual, nearly all Irish pubs in the city will have live music, including the Old Dubliner in Harburg, The Shamrock in St. Pauli, Paddy’s Bar and Fleetenkieker in the city, and of course The Irish Rover on Großneumarkt, offering many options to find a place to celebrate. So, head out and enjoy yourselves this weekend and raise a pint to the scattered scattered Irish and memories of home. But, whatever you do, remember to know your limits and make it home safe!
As our Hamburg-Irish community organization grows, there have been murmurs of a parade or a more centralized event in coming years, so keep tuned to our Facebook group for updates and discussions.
